Swype Keyboard for Touchscreens

Posted: 02 Jan 2009 08:06 AM PST

With the market getting flooded with touch screen phone like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, iPhone 3G and Nokia N97, applications that leverage on the touch screen functionality of these phones are being introduced. One of my readers, told me about a revolutionary new application, Swype. As the name suggests this application is made for touch screen phones where you need accuracy while creating messages and e-mails using touch enabled virtual keyboard. Using Swype you can use one continuous finger or stylus motion to input characters and words accurately and quickly. This application enables you to input 50 characters per minute. So where can you use this application? It can be used with touch enabled mobile phones, notebooks, game consoles, virtual kiosks etc.

You just need to trace the path of the word you are planning to write. As shown in the picture, the path is traced to input the word Quick. You don not need to be very accurate with Swype and it will automatically guess the word/words depending on the way your trace your words path. The application gives you a QWERTY keyboard, speed to input almost 50 words per minute, both finger and a stylus can be used for text input, supports multiple languages and common editing options. Right now the application is not available for download but you can register your device here and Swype will notify you when it is available for your device. This seems to a really promising application. I have already registered for this application for my Symbian mobile phone and I will be waiting for it.
