CEO_Nokia.jpgThough 2009 is not supposed to be very exciting for most of the mobile phone companies, Nokia is exepcting to make some profits. Nokia's CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo has said that the company will focus on making profits in the trubulent 2009 market for mobile phones. Due to the recent economic slum many analysts have said that mobile phone companies will be fall nehind their sales volume. Nokia's CEO also confirmed that as compared to their rivals their position is pretty strong and they will increase their market share as consumers are still hungry for sheaper models. This is really true, consumers, especially in emerging markets like India, are really hungry for cheap mobile phones and Nokia has always made sure that provide consumers with cheap model. Majority of Indians who buy cheap but branded cell phones for their day to day use buy a Nokia phone. Also, Nokia's portfolio is pretty vast and deep so the company is certainly in a strong position as compared to its rivals. This will also be an important factor for Nokia to make profits in 2009 and increase its market share. By the way, Nokia lost some market share by the end of 2008 and it seems that it is all set in 2009 to get that back.

First Impression: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Posted: 01 Jan 2009 06:49 PM PST

Ok, now a lot of us have been tired of reading about the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The phone is all set to be launched in the Indian market on Jan 3rd. I happen to get my hands on a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and also had a chat with one of my reader who has got this touch screen Nokia device before it is even launched in India. For those who are not aware of why people are getting crazy about Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, here are some pointers, it is the first touch screen (not exactly first, but yeah first home grown) XpressMusic phone from Nokia based on S60 Touch, it does not have a keypad but sports a huge touch screen interface with virtual keypad just like the iPhone, it has Symbian 9.3 5th Edition OS, 3.2 mega pixel snapper with LED flash, built-in accelerometer, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Nokia maps. It is being touted as the iPhone killer. Indians are eagerly waiting for this touch screen wonder from their favorite and trusted brand of mobile phones. Lets see if this phone will really satisfy the complex Indian consumer. Below you will find my initial impressions about the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Nokia 5800's display is huge, colorful and pretty bright. Nokia has made sure that Nokia 5800's display is something that will complement its touch screen functionality. The touch scree interface of the Nokia 5800 is pretty and not that bad as many people have told me. There is a stylus that is located on the side of the phone and also you can use the heart shape thing attached to the lanyard to browse through the phone. Once you are on the main menu screen, on the lower left handside there is a phone dialer, the keys are pretty big so you wont have any accidental key presses when you are using your fingers to dial any specified number. The keypad reminded me that of the iPhone, especially the color scheme

.

Also, on the main screen you have lot of shortcuts to different menus and you can customize this by putting any other shortcuts, which you might like. The virtual keypad of the phone that is used for dialing numbers does not have corresponding alphabets, which you normally find on other Nokia phones for example, you have the letters A, B and C on the 2 key. You have a separate keyboard for typing your messages and e-mails. Even this key board is pretty big, which I think is necessary for any touch screen phone. Like in the iPhone, there is a separate keyboard for numbers and symbols, that will be used often by the user while composing messages and e-mails. There is also a standard numeric keypad that looks just like any Nokia phone keypad with numbers and alphanumeric characters.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has hand writing recognition functionality, where you just write using the stylus and the phone will convert your hand written text/numbers into an input. This works pretty well and did not disappoint me.

The XpressMusic player is good but not that great. The interface is same like the XpressMusic players you have in Nokia XpressMusic phones. The video quality is also fine and as the phone has a large screen you can enjoy your favorite movies on it. Check out some screen shots of The Dark Knight,

You will get a cute looking stand with the package that can be used with the phone when you listening to music on its loud speaker or watching movies. The stand is a really cool accessory that compliments the phone in every possible way and comes very very handy. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Personal Organizer, speaker phone are some of the other functionalities, which you will find on this phone. The phone seems to be promising enough for the price point at which it will be launched in India. The functions and features are pretty impressive but it might not give the same touch screen experience to a mobile phone user that he/she gets from the Apple's iPhone. But let me tell you one thing, if you are a Nokia fan and have loved their products then I am very much sure that this phone will not disappoint you. I hope to get a piece for myself soon and then you can check out this space for more in-depth review. The first impression of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic was good, I hope this First Impression is The Last Impression.
