Nokia and Microsoft To Make Important Announcement for Mobile Office?

Posted: 11 Aug 2009 06:55 PM PDT

It seems that Microsoft and Nokia will be making an important alliance announcement tomorrow. Earlier the efforts of Microsoft to get WinMo on Nokia phones failed but this new announcement has nothing to do with getting WinMo up and running on Nokia mobile phones. The announcement will be regarding an alliance of Microsoft and Nokia with respect to getting Microsoft's Office Suite up and running on Nokia mobile phones. These are just the speculations and both the the companies have still not given out any details or the objective of the call. Yeah, but some some big journos and bloggers have been invited to this call and we would get the news soon about what exactly this is all about. If the speculation comes out to be true, then Microsoft's Office suite will get a big mobile playground given the market share of Symbian based smart phones. Read more about this @ Online Wall Street Journal. This is not the first time that Nokia and Microsoft have come together for softwares and services last year Windows Live went live for Nokia S60 based handsets. Nokia also signed up to use Microsoft's Silverlight platform on its S60 and S40 based mobile phones.

Some really funny things and funny rules happen when you try to restrict technology in a particular region when the other parts of the world are enjoying the same without any limits. China, for example is very much restrictive with respect to what its people are watching, reading on the Internet. Now the focus is on mobile phones, according to a report, sending an unwanted erotic, lewd or insulting SMS in China, would land you into jail for 5 f*****g days or 500 Yuan as fine!!! Three messages would send you for a 10 day trip to jail but the monetary fine remains the same. The government has set up this rule just to control the problem of unwanted messages. This rules has been passed in the province of Henan in China and other provinces are also treating erotic/insulting messages like sexual harassment. You would be surprised to know that, the Shenze party in China held 480 meetings to discuss this problem and come to a conclusion.

According to an article in Financial Times Germany, they have a source saying that, Nokia is now done with their popular smart phone mobile OS, Symbian and is now looking forward to Maemo, a flavor of Linux, to be made available on most of its smart phones going ahead in future. You would be aware that Nokia has been using Maemo on its Internet tablets like the N800 and the N810. Also, the new Nokia Tablet, Nokia Rover, which is going to be unveiled at the Nokia World 2009, will be having the latest version of Maemo on it and is also capable of making phone calls unlike the previous Nokia tablets. So the Nokia Rover is the first Maemo based smart phone from Nokia and going forward you might see Maemo being used on more and more Nokia smart phones. The FT source said that Nokia thinks Symbian is unable to keep up with competition from Apple and RIM, which has forced Nokia to think about its future along with its smart phones. I guess this is just a speculation from some industry analyst given the fact that Nokia Rover would be launching soon. Symbian as a mobile OS has a string smart phone market share along with a huge developer base around the world and Nokia wont let that go so easily. It will take a lot of time for Nokia to leave Symbian and embrace Maemo fully for its smart phones.
