Nokia recently launched its Nokia Life Tools for rural India, especially farmers. Walking on the Finnish giant's steps, Tata Teleservices is now testing a very unique technology, which is developed for Indian farmers. With the help of this wireless technology, farmers would be able to control irrigation to their farm lands using mobile phones. This is a very different and innovative step by Tata Teleservices to help farmers who suffer the inconsistent supply of electricity in India. So how this thing works, Tata Teleservices would be providing the farmer with a mobile phone for INR 2,000; wireless device for INR 2,700 that goes with the pump; and monthly charges. The wireless device will be attached to the irrigation pump and by dialing a code from the mobile phone, farmers can remotely monitor their farm's irrigation schedule. The phone can also be used for day to day communications. This technology when implemented will be really helpful for farmers as they would be saving on cost as well as money. Last but not the least, the technology has been developed and manufactured in India and will be called "Nano Ganesh". The technology features,

* Water pump can be controlled from any distance by a mobile or land line phone.

* A mobile network is essential near the water pumps.

* One can check availability of the power supply at the pump end.

* One can check the load on / off status by a simple audio tone.

* Automatic Mode / Remote Mode Available.

* Provision of memory for storing the on and off commands.

With the N97, Nokia is pushing widgets as a feature among the mobile users in India. Widgets and customizable homescreen are one the two striking features of the N97. Users can have pre-defined widgets on their N97 homescreen or the one's who are of a geeky kind have their own widgets built and show-off on the home screen. To explore this kind of talent, Nokia and NDTV have come up with, "Nokia N97 Widget Master" contest where people and N97 users can submit their idea in the form of a widget. This widget can be anything unique which the user thinks will improve the N97 experience. If you are interested, go to NDTV Gadgets and submit your widget concept and also a digital copy in the form of a word file (Contest only for legal citizens of India). Users can visually depict the concept of their widget by sending it in .pdf, .ppt or .jpg format. The best part of this concept is that you don't need to be a techie and you don't need to design a whole widget, you just need to visualize the concept and if chosen, Nokia developers will take care that your widget makes it to thousands of the N97 screens out there. By the way, this is the complete list of widgets that are currently available for Indian N97 users, make sure you have something different in your mind ;-)
Sorry missed out on this piece of information:
The top three submissions will receive and prizes that include:
  • 1 unit of the new Nokia N97
The first winner will be eligible for:
  • A 2 day trip to Helsinki, Finland for 1, including a half day tour of the Nokia Design Studio in Espoo
