iPhone OS 3.0 Leaves Behind Many Happy Users and Developers Posted: 17 Mar 2009 09:54 AM PDT In few minutes from now, Apple will be launching the OS 3.0 for the iPhone. I have a very positive feeling that the new iPhone is also coming this year . Lets focus on the OS launch first. Copy and paste is one of the highly anticipated functions in this new version of the iPhone OS. Just few minutes from now and the rumors about the new iPhone OS will start turning to be a reality. There is a rumor that Apple might also be launching its MAC tablet today, which I guess is very unlikely. By the way, till now Apple has sold 13.7 million iPhones and 30 million in total if you take the iPod touch. Apple OS 3.0 is finally launched and these are the highlights - (It was ranked as the number one phone for Business Users by JD Power, surprising!!) - The new OS comes with pretty good features for both users and developers alike. Apple has come up with 1000 new APIs for developers. This is a good move from Apple's side for the developer community. Users can purchase applications, games e-books and their updates on the go. The new API from Apple will help set-up a peer to peer connection between two iPhones and iPod Touche. This will not happen over a Bluetooth connection but over an IP connection. Users can play games using the existing Bonjour technology. Users can share stuff on the go. - The new iPhone OS 3.0 also allows accessory manufacturers and dev guys to build their own protocols to communicate with the phone's hardware, thats pretty cool. The Maps application on the iPhone OS 3.0 has an API thats allows it to be easily embedded with 3rd party applications. Apple also launched the Push in background processes. There are new APIs for, audio and video streaming, communication while gaming, text and image highlighting. - Meebo, the popular messenger platform, will have a native application for the iPhone. It brings its cross-platform messaging client for the new iPhone OS 3.0. The Push technology is really helpful for Meebo users as you get a instant notification of a friend being added or an IM. Apart from Meebo, EA, the gaming giant, also introduced SIMS for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Oracle also introduced its software for the business guys one the move, help manage their stock levels and stuff like that. - ESPN's app will now be a native app on the iPhone OS 3.0 and will target the sports enthusiasts by giving them sports updates breaking news etc. Like its happened during the launch of the iPhone 3G, this time also the new OS has some soft corner for applications that focus on our heath and diseases. Lifescan, a J&J company showcased its applications for diabetes management. So you have your small iPhone who will record all your readings (through a scanner with bluetooth or cable) with respect to blood sugar and help you manage and plan your meals. The applications shows you your health related data in the form of interactive graphs, pretty cool!! - ngmoco, which makes games exclusively for iPhone and the iPod touch showcased two games, First Touch Pets, social pet game with social network integration and pretty cool graphics. This game will do in Japan I guess. The other game, which they showcased was LiveFire, first-person multi-player shooter game with a dedicated global gaming server. This FPS game has a in-game chat and you can also buy inventory for your arsenal using Push technology and kick some ass. -A brainy guy from Stanford showcased an application called, Leaf Trombone, which lets you play with other musicians online. Important Features for Users: -The most anticipated function of all Copy and paste was also launched at this event along with 100 new features that this new version of the iPhone OS will have for its users. So now you will have more incentives to buy the new iPhone, which might come in June 2009. So how the Copy and Paste function works on this new OS, you need to double tap the text to auto select, if you have to copy a big sentence then double tap and slide you thumb to the end of the sentence. A magnifying glass kind of utility will make sure that you are precise in your action. So Kevin Rose was right, he knew this was coming :-) you can shake the iPhone to Undo, Redo or cancel your copy and paste commands. It also works on web pages. Apple has also introduced landscape mode keyboard wherever it is needed like SMS, Notes etc. -The MMS functionality has also come to the iPhone OS 3.0 and now you can forward and delete individual messages from your iPhone. No more hacking of the iPhone to do all this stuff, now it is readily available. Now MMS on the iPhone can be used to send and receive images, audio, locations and contact details. - The new OS can also record Voice memos using external or built-in receiver. Users can edit and share these voice memos using email and MMS. Now Apple has made the iPhone a true phone man. Awesome!!! - Search has been made global and you can use search on all key applications of the iPhone like mail, calendar etc. New homescreen is developed by Apple in this version of the OS, called as Spotlight. You slide left and you get Spotlight and you can search all your applications. Kevin Rose was again bang on target with respect to search too!! - Some other things include, Stereo A2DP Bluetooth, Wi-Fi auto log-in, Notes sync with PC or MAC using iTunes, support for YouTube account and YouTube subscriptions, anti-phishing tool for mobile Safari, password protection for Safari (log-in manager), Parental control for movies, TV Shows and App store content. So this is why the new 3.0 version of the Apple iPhone OS rocks, It has Copy and Paste functionality, MMS functionality, stereo bluetooth, Notes Sync, secure Internet experience. One more good news is that, 3.0 will be coming soon and the upgrade is free for iPhone 3G owners and 9.95$ for iPod touch owners. Even if you upgrade, not all features will be available. All said and done, there is still no news whether Apple is launching the new iPhone or not :-( , also no news on whether Apple iPhone will support flash in the near future,nothing on pairing of iPhone and wireless keyboards. New Apple iPhone, Myth or a Reality? Posted: 17 Mar 2009 12:20 AM PDT Today evening India time Apple will be launching the Version 3.0 of the iPhone OS. Digg's Kevin Rose shared the insider information of Apple coming up with a copy paste function in this new version and other enhancements that most of the Apple iPhone users around the world are eagerly waiting for. Apple, till now, has not made an official announcement regrading whether it will be coming up with the new iPhone this year. But looking back at previous two years where Apple has launched two version of the iPhone, first iPhone in 2007 and then the iPhone 3G in 2008, it seems that, Apple will be launching the new version of the iPhone. There are indicators of the new iPhone coming, the first being today's launch of the new version of the iPhone OS (the new iPhone will have this OS) and second being Apple asking its flash memory suppliers to beef up the supply this year. So a new iPhone in 2009 might be a reality soon. Also, I feel that the existing iPhone users won't be upgraded to the new OS 3.0, which will be launched soon. May be Apple wants them to wait for the new iPhone and upgrade to a new iPhone itself. What do you guys think??
